I'm Back!!!

I just wanted to announce that after an unexpectedly long absents, I am back!  It's good to be back too.  It has been a long road of growing, learning and did I say growing?  What I mean by that is personal growth.  A lot has changed since my last post.  All of it has been for the better too.

In the next several posts my plan is to share some experiences and give others the chance to glean something from them.

For those of you who have been following my Facebook page and Twitter, you may be wondering how my dad is doing.  He is doing great considering.  That is one of the miracles I witnessed in the last couple months and will be a good part of my posts since that played a big part in my absents.

So, without further due I welcome myself back and all of you.  Expect some goods reads!

My Paradigm Shift

I have been reading through Stephen Covey's book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People," and in the beginning of the book Dr. Covey talks about paradigms and what they are, how everyone experiences them to some extent.

Through all this that is going on with my dad and our whole family, I have experienced a paradigm shift.  A paradigm, according to Dr. Covey, is how people perceive the world and life.  A paradigm shift is when that perception is changed by an event or realization, and you see everything in a whole new light.

This is what has happend in my life.  Experiencing this change in our lives and realizing its impact, I now see life itself and death in a whole new light.  This is something that is hard to explain, but is very real to me.

In my upbringing I have been taught and studied about life and death according to God's Word.  But now I am seeing what I have read in the Bible and been taught my whole life come to a new light.  It's like it's being played out right in front of my eyes.

I know I am not the one practically looking at death in the face, but I am right there with my dad, and know his response to it.  For a believer in Christ, death is actually a beautiful thing.  It is the beginning of real life; life with Him forever.  As my dad has quoted his life verse many-a-time, "...for me to live is Christ and to die is gain."  Oh how true that is.

Now I see life and death through my dad's eyes and God's eyes so much more clearly, and I realize how perfect God's plan is in all of our lives.  He has so intricately, in His wisdom, put together a plan for each of us, and we should be striving to live by that plan so that we can truly live in our death for His glory.  Amen!

The Beginning Of A New Spiritual Journey

God has taken us on an extraordinary and unique journey this past week when we found out that my dad was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive cancer in it's end stages.  This was a shock to all of us including the doctor, and caused us all to re-examine our lives in a whole different way.  I wanted to share what I have observed and experienced so far in this adventure (as my dad called it with a smile).

Faith
From the beginning, my dad has demonstrated the strongest faith I have witnessed in real life.  After hearing about his cancer some of his first words were his life verse, " I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.  For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Philippians 1:20-21.  He was at peace with whatever God was going to allow; whether he lives or dies.

Many people visited while he was in the hospital.  Some came to be encouraged by my dad because they knew he would be the only one that could encourage them, which he did.

Unity of the Church
There has been no time or place that I have seen the unity of the church of God better demonstrated than what I have witnessed in this past week.  We had many Christian friends visit and offer to help in any way they can.  My mom's boss was an angel brought to us.  She coordinated meals that were brought to us throughout the week.  She also screened calls for us so we wouldn't be bombarded with calls.  Several people gave money as well as groups from church and work.

Before dad was discharged, he asked the elders from their church to come and pray over him.  We had a great prayer session and dad was anointed with oil.  What a great example of the passage in Romans about the unity of the church.

Relationship of Husband and Wife
In the twenty plus years my parents have been married, I have never seen a better example of the affection and intimate relationship of a married couple as was demonstrated to me this past week.  I witnessed the best biblical example of true love of a husband and wife in my parents.  What a blessing it was to witness such a incredible thing in this time.

The Sovereignty of God
God has shown Himself in many ways through all of this.  He has shown us all that He is in control, will take care of us and knows what's best for us.  A lot of questions have been asked though.  We don't know what's going to happen to dad, but we do know that he is in God's hands and whatever happens, God will get the glory.

It is hard to trust a God we cannot see and let Him take total control when we can't see the big picture and only have a small piece of the puzzle.  But we CAN trust Him because He is the only One that sees the whole picture and the only One that knows exactly what we are going through.

This past week has been a growing experience for all of us.  We have cried.  We have laughed.  We have shared many things together.  As my dad said it, it isn't going to be easy, but this is going to be an adventure.  We trust God for His will to be done and are satisfied that He will carry us through this adventure and provide us with the strength and peace we need to get through it.

Not-So-Good Healthcare or Obamacare?

This new health bill that has come out has been quite a controversy since it's inception.  I can't claim to know everything about the bill, but what I do know does not seem to be very positive for the American people.  I also can't vouch for our current healthcare system either.  There are many problems with that too.  So let's look at some facts and see what we have.

I know this can be a sensitive subject for some, so I will try to lay this down as lightly as possible.  I first think that it is strange that the Obama administration pushed this bill so hard and tried to get it passed so quickly.  The healthcare system is not something you can change over night (which it won't, but...) and neither should it be something taken lightly.  I personally feel it should have been thought out better and that the planning process had been more structured and transparent.

I do agree with one thing; we definitely need an overhaul with the healthcare system.  Prices are not going down anytime soon and healthcare cost continues to rise.  It is getting harder and harder for even companies to provide health benefits to their employers.  Just seeing a doctor could cost 100's of dollars and going to the ER is easily in the 1000's.  This I know.  I see it every day at work.  Our current system just isn't working.  But what is the solution to this?  Is the new healthcare bill going to help at all?

There are a few things in this bill that might be worthy of the people's demands, but most of the bill and the general concept is not acceptable.  This new system is based on models in Europe and Canada and is grossly like a socialistic system.  I have friends and family in Europe and Canada and all of them have more negative to say about the system than positive.   There are several states that have ruled this bill to be unconstitutional.  This is partly due to the fact that part of the bill requires people to get insurance and the government is meddling too much in the American people's lives and not giving them the freedom to choose for themselves.

It all boils down to this.  Our country is in dire need of a major makeover of our healthcare system.  The Obama administration had the right idea of looking at this problem, but may have tried to solve it too quickly.  This might be just a bandaid on a gaping wound and could later give our children and children's children gangrene.  I hope this doesn't come to that, but we will see soon enough.

Spring Break: Hot Destinations

My week has been off all week for my postings, but tomorrow I hope to get back on schedule.  Since my regular Wednesdays are about travel, I decided to do a post on spring break.  Most of the east coast is going on break starting this weekend, and since I live on the east coast I thought that fit in just right.

There are a lot of hot destinations to go on spring break.  For those of you wanting to travel out of the country some good spots to look into are in Mexico such Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta.  Montego Bay in Jamaica is always good too, and other locations in Jamaica.  You can't go wrong in the Bahamas either.

For those who want to stick to the mainland and not venture into foreign waters, there are some good spots nationally that are great destinations.  How about South Padre Island, Texas or Panama City Beach, Florida or Southern California destinations like Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Long Beach.

These are all great places to go that are warm and usually have great weather.  Now I do have to admit that I am not saying this out of experience, but I do know that these places are known to be great destinations.  This is a great time to get plane tickets too.  The spring sales are coming out and there are some pretty cheap tickets if you keep your eye out.  Again, I have to mention Kayak.com.  It's a great site and you can even set up alerts for just about anything.

So I hope everyone enjoys their spring break and happy travels.

The Power Of Prayer

It seems that no matter what religion or faith you practice that there is some sort of version of prayer that is incorporated into it.  Prayer is a very powerful tool and as an evangelical Christian, prayer is very important to me.

There are several different forms of prayer.  There is prayer of gratitude, confession, praise, worship and supplication (in which you bring your concerns and worries in prayer).  Sometimes we ask for things and sometimes we just want someone to talk to.

The most powerful prayer anyone can pray is salvation.  Salvation from sin, a life of ruin and emptiness and into a life of forgiveness, meaning and purpose.  The prayer of salvation can change someone's life dramatically.

There are also times when we come before God or whoever you are praying to and beg for mercy and ask for help in time of need.  It is prayers like these that we definitely get answers.  They might not be what we would intend them to be, but there is always an answer.

Another powerful prayer is praying on behalf of someone; intercessory prayer.  A good example of this is when someone is deathly ill and you pray for them for God to heal them.  These are powerful prayers.

There is also something about prayer that brings comfort to the one praying.  I guess it's because you know that the One you are praying to is hearing you and knows best and has total control.  It's always relieving to lighten a burdened load off your back and be able to give it to someone else who is capable of carrying that burden for you.  Then again, you have to know for sure that whoever you pray to exists and has your best interest in mind.  I know that the God of the Bible is that way.  He has proved Himself time and time again.  What about you?  Something to think about.

Disability Compared

I want to start by clarifying that when I am talking about disability, I am not talking about the short and long-term disability benefit you receive from your employer.  I am talking about Social Security disability.  This is a permanent benefit that provides an income for those who are unable to work.  This is provided from the Social Security Administration and is a federal program.

I would like to compare the two disability benefits that Social Security has and explain the general process that happens to reach a decision.  These two programs are SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Income).

Social Security Disability Income
  • Only those who have paid enough social security taxes while working can receive this benefit.  The key number is 40 work credits but does vary by age.   You can earn up to four credits a year.
  • There is no maximum or minimum amount for this benefit.  It is based on how much you have paid into the "system."
  • There are no income limits or resource limits to qualify.
  • Family members can draw from your benefit as well (specifically children)
  • Is retroactive to the date you can prove your disability began.
  • The application can be done online.  Other paperwork can be done online too.
  • If you return to work, you lose the benefit.
Supplemental  Security Income
  • Program is available to newborns who meet weight and health requirements, young adults with no work credits, adults that don't have enough work credits, and those 65 and older who meet income requirements.
  • Payout is usually based on how much income is coming into the home two months before the disability, and has a maximum payout of $674 this year for singles and $1011 for couples.
  • There are income and resource limits to receive the benefit.  They usually coincide with Medicaid or are close.
  • If you receive SSI you are almost automatically eligible for Medicaid.  You just need to apply and provide proof of the benefit.
  • Family members should still be able to draw benefits from you.
  • Is not retroactive.  Benefit begins the month of application and payment the month after application.
  • The application must be done by calling 1-800-772-1213 to set up an appointment.  Social Security is moving toward allowing this to be online also like SSDI is.
  • If you return to work and don't make of $674 a month, you can still receive this benefit.
The general process for applying for disability goes like this.  You call Social Security to set up an interview appointment or apply online at www.ssa.gov.  From there a "lead" is set up for you and the process begins.  Your claim is then sent to the local office.  Some preliminary paperwork is done and sent to the claimant.  Then the case is sent to DDS (Disability Determination Services) where the medical evaluation of your claim takes place.  When that is complete, it is sent back to the local office where the non-medical determination is made.  They have 30 to complete the claim from here.  From start to finish it normally takes 120 days or more to process a claim.  For more information on this process you can read my blog post from 6/22/10.

I trust this has been useful information.  There will most likely be more posts in the future that share more detail about these programs and the process for applying for them.

Be Prepared! Learn A Little Language!

When I was in college I had the opportunity of traveling with an ensemble one summer.  We had the privilege of going to Venezuela for part of that summer.  There was a lot of preparation involved for that trip.  We even had to learn some Spanish (including songs and our testimony).  It's always good to be prepared.

Most our time was spent in the city of Puerto Ordaz.  It's a nice little town.  We were able to sing in several private and public schools in the area and some churches too.  Each program we took turns sharing our testimony to the kids.  This was done in Spanish or with a translator.  When it came to my turn, we were at a church and there were a lot of kids.  They were rowdy and noisy, but when I started to talk, you could here a pin drop in that room.  Not only was I speaking Spanish, but my accent was little to none.  The kids were so impressed they seemed to hang on my every word.

I share this illustration because it is always good to learn at least some of the language of the country you are visiting.  You don't know how much that is appreciated by the nationals.  It shows that you care about them as people and have a desire to relate to them and their culture.  You would be surprised how much a difference it makes, even if you just try to speak their language.

This is only one aspect of preparing to visit a country, but it is a useful one too.  Knowing some common phrases can get you around if you are lost, allow you to buy products from stores and markets, order your food at a restaurant, etc.   It is easy to find material to help you learn languages now-a-days.  There are books, computer software and online help.

So, when getting ready to go somewhere overseas, don't forget to pack your translator!  Be prepared.

Choose Wisely: Picking Your Bible Education

I remember when I was in high school trying to decide where to go to college.  I looked through so many college brochures and material.  At least I had it narrowed down to schools that provide missionary aviation, and they had to be a Bible college.  I wanted my Bible education, and I wanted a good one too.

It takes a lot to pick the right school.  By the time I had graduated from high school I had narrowed it down to three different schools; Moody Bible Institute, Lancaster Bible College and Piedmont Baptist College.  I had applied to all three and been accepted by two of them; Lancaster and Piedmont.

My Junior year I was able to visit Cornerstone (in Michigan), Lancaster and Piedmont.  I was impressed with Cornerstone although it was a big college, but they dropped their aviation program my Senior year.  I never heard from Moody, so it was between Lancaster and Piedmont.

It took a lot of prayer and consideration of the pros and cons before I decided to go with Piedmont.  Boy am I glad I picked Piedmont!  My four years there were the best years ever.  I learned a ton, made lifelong friends, grew spiritually and in knowledge of the Bible, learned about ministry and ministering.  It was wonderful, and I wouldn't trade it for the world!

I just comes to show that if you choose wisely and pick your Bible education wisely, you will profit immensely and enjoy every bit of the journey.  Picking good Bible education is important in your spiritual journey.  It is a time when you can glean from those of wisdom and knowledge, and creates a time in your life that you can treasure for ever.

Medicaid vs. Medicare

I talk to a lot of patients in my current line of work and share with them assistance I can offer them to help apply for health benefits.  Almost every one I talk to seems not to have a clear idea what the difference is between Medicaid and Medicare, so I decided to publish this post to see if I could clear up some of that confusion.

I have devised a chart that breaks down the differences and similarities between Medicare and Medicaid.  Below is this chart:

Funded by Federal government
Funded by Federal government, but managed by the state
Applied through Social Security
Applied through Social (or Human) Services
Must be 65, disabled for at least two years or on dialysis to receive
Can be 18 or younger, 65 or older, pregnant, blind, disabled or have minor children in the home with virtually no income to receive (in most states)
Benefit is based on if you paid your Medicare taxes or not
Benefit based on income and assets according to % of poverty level (varies by state and program)
Has parts A (for inpatient & hospital stays), B (for ER/Out patient, doctor visits), D (prescription plan) and a few others for different coverages
Has different kinds of Medicaid for Medicare supplements, nursing home, families and children, disabled, adoption, pregnancy, in home care, and more (can vary by state)
Part A is free if you paid Medicare taxes, while other parts have a premium
Is free as long as you meet the requirements
Has a deductible for inpatient stay, prescriptions and maybe other services
Has little to no deductible for services

I trust this is helpful information and helps clears up some confusion about the two programs.

Memories in Morocco

One of the alleys in town.  Took this myself.
I remember one of my favorite trips.  It was when I was staying in Spain for a couple weeks.  We decided to go to Morocco for a couple days and check out the sites.  I know that doesn't sound like a good idea, but this was back in 1998 and we did do our homework and were careful.

I took the ferry from Algeciras, Spain across the Straight of Gibraltar to Tangier.  From there we took a two hour taxi drive (and that was an experience) inland to a nice little town called Chefchaouen tucked in the mountains.  It literally means between two mountains.  It was a beautiful little town.

We stayed in a little hotel in town and had a guide named "Toto," yes that is what he called himself.  He spoke English and was quite the entertainer.  It was great.  He took us to the non-tourist places.  We had great authentic food.  It was my first experience with coucous.  Love the stuff now.  They also had some type of melon that was out of this world.

The town was a quiet one with generous and kind people.  The walls were painted white and blue.  The first five feet up was blue.  That was to keep the mosquitoes and other like bugs away.  The rest of the way was white.  This was to keep the buildings cool.  It worked too.

We saw beautiful gardens, went to a carpet weaver's store and ate in a local family's home for supper one day.  The last day we were there we stopped at a little "cafe" and I had some wonderful hot mint tea.  It was piping hot too.  That's the way they drink it.  It was in the middle of the summer, but they said the hot drink makes you cooler.  Supposedly you sweat after drinking it and that makes you feel cooler.

It was one of the most fun 3 days.  It was very relaxing and nice to be in a place so nice and tranquil.  This is a memory I will never forget.  It was an experience I'll cherish forever.  What a rich culture to experience.

Can The Truth Be Found?

This subject is the one I have most experience in and it was very difficult to decide what to write about today.  There are so many things to share.  I decided to discuss a little about the different religions of the world and suggest where the truth can be found.

I could get into truth and how people perceive it to be subjective or relative, but I am not going to get into that.  I wanted to share more about what religions are saying truth is and give you a chance to make your own choice and make your own conclusion about truth.

There are many religions in the world.  You could almost says thousands.  Many are classified as cults, but that still leaves many left.  Of all the religions there are only a few that are faith-based religions.  Others base everything on works (what you do in this life).  All have their own concept of the afterlife.  And all of them have their own views on what eternity holds.  Then you have the Atheist who believes none of the idea that there is a higher Power out there governing every event in the universe.

The majority of the world consists of Catholics, Muslims, and Biblical Christians.  These are the main religions of the world.  Some categorize all of these into the category of Christians.  These are also some of the faith-based religions that believe there is only one God.  Other religions that don't fall that far behind are Hinduism, Buddhism and Pantheism.  These are polytheistic, which means they believe there are many gods.  All of these claim to have the right way to get to "Heaven," and claim to have the truth.  But who really has the truth?  Is there more than one way to Heaven?

I would venture to say that there is one of these religions that seems to have the most consistency in history and to be the most constant.  That is Biblical Christianity.  This is a faith that is experienced through the Bible or the Word of God.  This book claims to hold truth and be truth.  No other book does that.  It is also the only religion in the world that is not based on works to get you into heaven.  It is solely on faith that the God-man Jesus Christ died on a cross for our sins and rose again from the dead, conquering death and sin.

Christianity (also known as Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, etc.) is also the only religion in which their prophet or savior or whoever you want to call him, does not die and stay dead.  Jesus did die, but he rose again the third day and was witnessed by hundreds and could be thousands before he ascended into heaven in the clouds (which was also witnessed by many).  It is the most documented religion with every fact and prophecy that has been fulfilled done with 100% accuracy.

The "holy" book of Christianity, the Bible, has lasted over 2000 years and has remained constant.  Yes there has been different translations, but each translation says the same thing, just in a different way.  This book has stood the test of time and even several attempts in history to annihilate it from the planet without success.

I could go on and on about this.  There just is no comparison, but don't take my word for it.  Check it out for yourself.  Read the Bible to find out what it's all about.  Study the different religions and search for the truth.  It IS out there just waiting to be found, but it is up to you to start the search.

Do You Need Disability?

There has consistently been a rise in disability claims with Social Security in the last year.   More and more people are contracting diseases and conditions that are preventing them from being able to work.  The economy situation has definitely played a part in this, but when do you really know when you need disability?  Consider these when you are thinking of applying.

  1. Before applying for Social Security benefits, find out if you have short and long-term disability through your work.  This is especially useful if the condition you have is temporary and won't last more than 12 months.  A lot of companies have this disability benefit.  It is something you have to pay for, but it is very cheap and worth it.    The employer's disability benefit is there to utilize if you have something that will not keep you from returning to work, but will keep you out of work for awhile.   The benefit isn't like getting paid from working, but at least it's an income.
  2. Research the condition you have.  Ask yourself, "Is this permanent?  Can I live with this?  Is there some type of work I can do even with this?"  These are questions you want to ask yourself, because Social Security asks similar questions when they evaluate your condition.  What they are looking at is something that would prevent you from returning to work at least for 12 months.
  3. They consider your age and education when evaluating eligibility.  A lot of times if you don't have a high school diploma, it gives you a better chance because it is going to be hard to re-educate you.  Also with certain conditions if you are over 50 years old, you have a better chance to get disability because your body can't heal or heal as well.  Heart disease is common for this one.
  4. Make sure you have medical records and a good medical history that documents your condition.  This is especially important for psychological conditions.  They need to be documented well.  There is nothing wrong with being prepared.
  5. Be prepared to fill out a lot of paperwork.  I think they want to discourage you from applying because there is a lot of paperwork to fill out just to get started.  Also don't forget to be patient.  This is a federal program and they always take a long time to come to a decision.
These are a few things to consider when you are considering to apply for disability.  Remember, this is a last resort benefit that you use if you don't have any other option.  By all means work if you can, even if you don't have experience or education in it.

Preparing For Your Trip: Cultural Differences

It has been a whirlwind of a week so far, and today is the first day I have been able to publish a post.  I apologize to those who were looking forward to Monday's subject post.  Unfortunately I have to stick with the schedule in order to stay on schedule.

Today I wanted to share a few things I have learned in my years of travel and experiencing other cultures.  When traveling to another country, it is good to do a little studying before you go.  You don't want to offend someone or do something that would be interpreted as offensive or intentionally intimidating.

There are lots of cultural differences between countries, and a good resource to start your search for info. of course, is the internet.  If you are more old school or enjoy books, a good place to go is the local library or bookstore (such as Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million).

Start by looking at maps of the country and cities you will be going to.  Get familiar with the locations, the surrounding terrain, attractions, popular locations, etc. so you can get a good layout of the land.  This will help you to plot out your trip better and not make you feel lost when you get there.

Another good thing to look up is what the climate is usually like (you need to know what kind of clothes to wear) for that particular time of year, the local currency and exchange rates.  Find out what prices are like so you can budget your money better.

Gather information about the people, what they are like, what their customs are.  This is important to understand so you don't offend them.  In some cultures you don't use your left hand for anything except to go to the bathroom.  In some cultures it is rude to put your foot up and face the sole of your foot toward someone.  And in others it is common for people of the same sex to hold hands just to show friendship and nothing else.  These are things that are good to know so you don't embarrass yourself or those native to the country.

Read up on the local foods.  Are there any dishes you would like to try?  Maybe you will read about a kind of fruit you have never tasted and want to try.  You can learn tips like don't drink the tap water, only bottled.   That's the way it is in Morocco and Israel and many third world countries too.  In fact some countries it is recommended you not even drink water, but only soda from the bottle or can.

So don't forget to prepare for your trip adequately.  There are a lot of cultural differences to be learned to make your experience much more enjoyable.

Helping you get the upper hand to change your life forever,
